The Witcher, arguably one of the best fantasy book and video game series of all time, will be receiving its own Netflix show. Although best known as one of the biggest video game franchises of recent times, it originally began life as a series of 8 novels by Andrzej Sapowski. Sapowski will also be the creative consultant on this upcoming adaptation.
Will it differ from the games?
The likely answer is yes. Although the games are based off of the books, the books are not in anyway influenced by the games. Sapowski has previously stated that he has never even played a video game in his life and definitely would not look to them to gain inspiration for future books. This could lead to a slightly different feeling Witcher adaptation than we saw in say The Witcher 3 for example. I wouldn’t expect massive changes though. Tomas Baginski, who directed the intro videos for all of the Witcher games will direct at least one episode per season.
What is The Witcher story?
For those who aren’t familiar with the story here’s a quick overview. I won’t go into detail about Rivia, Blaviken, Foltest, Triss, Yen, Ciri or any of the other characters other than Geralt. Although if you aren’t familiar I cannot recommend enough that you play the games, they are phenomenal. The Witcher series centres around a main character, Geralt of Rivia, who is a witcher. A witcher’s job is to eradicate monsters, anything from Griffins to Wraiths and Ghouls to Goblins. As a young boy Geralt was taken to a witcher training school where he was put through the trial of the grasses, of which many youngsters die. This is to give the boys superhuman mutations, increasing their senses, physique and rendering them infertile. They are then put through their paces and train rigorously in both theory and practice until they are ready to slay beasts.
Witchers tend to be looked down on by society. They are seen as mutants who won’t help people for free and will only draw their sword when coin is raised. They also tend to have a very bland moral compass, helping more or less anyone who is willing to pay.
The story of the Witcher follows the exploits of Geralt through both good times and bad. He has his band of merry men and women who both come to his aid and require his help very often.
There is no official release date for the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher. It’s rumoured to be in very early development so I wouldn’t expect it until mid to late 2018.
