It feels like years since the announcement of Dead Island 2. 4 years to be exact as the official announcement was made in 2013 with the reveal trailer being released in 2014. So it raises a very good question, where the heck is it?
Well unfortunately it hasn’t been plain sailing for Dead Island 2. In fact the last piece of news regarding its development emerged over a year ago now. This announcement was a press release to say that Sumo Digital was to develop the game. Now you may be thinking “How was the developer announced 2 years after the game was announced and 1 year after the reveal trailer?”. To put it simply, the previous developers had a little bit of a spat with the IP owners Deep Silver and decided to part ways.
This isn’t incredibly uncommon in the video game world but it does usually symbolise trouble. When IP owners and developers argue, it is usually because the developers try to put their own spin on a game despite it not being truly ‘their game’. This upsets the owners and mommy and daddy start arguing.
However, thanks to Eurogamer who reached out to Deep Silver to ask them about the progress of Dead Island 2 and were treated to the following response:
“Dead Island 2 is in development at Sumo Digital, and we are excited by the progress the team are making with Deep Silver’s most successful IP. When we are ready to share more information, we will.”
This news gives me a big smile across my face. A lot of people trashed the original game for being too buggy, too outlandish and too repetitive but I loved it. Some of my best ever gaming memories were spent playing through the co-op mode with my best friend. Just spending hours chatting away and crushing skulls and we are both looking forward to the sequel.
For now, let’s reminisce over the original reveal trailer for Dead Island 2.
