We are now over half-way through the current console generation (probably) so I thought I would pull out my top 5 games with a few honourable mentions. Obviously this list is completely based on my opinion so feel free to agree or disagree with me in the comments or on social media.
No Man’s Sky – I’m kidding. The game was massively disappointing but the idea of an entirely procedurally generated game does please my nerdy side.
Shadow of Mordor – May have just included this because I’m excited for the sequel.
Firewatch – It was beautiful but just falls short of this list.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – This game would easily get on to any top 5 list but I haven’t included it due to it only being released a couple of weeks ago. I also don’t really know which console generation it falls into as Nintendo are kind of just doing their own thing.
#5 – Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Sic Parvis Magna. Naughty Dog smashed it out of the park once again with the latest game in Nathan Drake’s adventures. As with all of these games, the story was focused around finding lost pirate treasure but there was so much more to it than that. There was a deep backstory and emotions bursting from every relationship in the game. Naughty Dog might just have a future in the game industry.
#4 – Battlefield One
I’m sure there will be a lot of CoD fanboys and girls who disagree with this one but the fact is, Battlefield One was incredible. It took all of these historical moments and integrated them masterfully together. Its maps are gigantic and players really can play whatever way they want to.
#3 – Dark Souls 3
Dark Souls 3 is the one game on this top 5 list that I wouldn’t recommend to everyone. Casual gamers beware, this game is a whole new level of hard. However, if you are a fan of the series you will absolutely love it. The game feels so much rewarding when you have truly had to work hard for your rewards.
#2 – The Last of Us Remastered
Ok I know that I’m cheating as The Last of Us didn’t technically come out during this generation. But the remastered version did. I know it’s a massive reach but I honestly think that it was miles ahead of its time, therefore I’ve dragged it forward a generation. Still not buying it? Well I’m sorry but its too good to not include and I still personally see it as the benchmark for any story based video games.
#1 -The Witcher 3
Geralt of Rivia and friends returned in this console generation and it was truly an extravaganza (I’m running out of superlatives). It was a massive open world game with different endings depending on which path you chose. Even after putting over 100 hours into the game I still get the craving to play it. It has easily gone into my top 3 games of all time.
