The Surge is an upcoming video game developed by Deck 13. Their most notable game to date being Lords of the Fallen, which was good but not great so it’s fair to say that they aren’t exactly one of “the big boys” just yet. However, maybe The Surge will change that.
The Surge is a third person action RPG. You play as a human who has a mechanical/robotic exoskeleton and your goal is to kick ass whilst looking bad ass. What I do find very interested though, is the combat. From what we have seen thus far, combat is completely melee based. That doesn’t mean that it will be one-dimensional. Instead of button bashing, players will have to strategise how they attack opponents. Players can choose whether to hit a body part without armour, sneak up behind an enemy, tag and move around an enemy etc. We have seen developers try to implement this kind of system before and it is very difficult to do it properly, so far I would say that For Honor did it the best.
It will be interesting to see how the game play turns out and what kind of story will couple along with it. Not much has been revealed about the story yet although I’m guessing that they will go down the popular post-apocalyptic, dystopian future route although I have been wrong before. I don’t really know what kind of expectations to go into The Surge with, I haven’t seen anything to get me really excited but I also haven’t seen anything that makes me think it will be terrible either.
The Surge is scheduled for release on the 16th May 2017. It will be released on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
