Sniper Ghost Warrior is a series developed by CI Games. It was never really a series that challenged the Call Of Duty and Battlefields of this world but it is well respected in its own right. The game can probably be most easily compared with a game like Sniper Elite 4, which we reviewed here. Thus, we come to the third installment of the series, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 but how will it fare? Let’s find out…
Looks + Game Play
In terms of appearance, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 seems a little last gen. The character designs don’t look bad and the weapons look pretty good but they are let down by poor environmental textures (floor/rocks). Playing on the PlayStation 4 I also noticed a few instances of dropped frames. This usually occurs just as you look down the sight of your gun and can be frustrating if you’re trying to act quickly.
In terms of game play, it does play quite well. Obviously, it is very heavily focused on the long game/sniping but it also handles itself quite well in open gunfire. The driving mechanic, whilst not perfect, is decent for a game that isn’t driving focused. In fact it feels better than the driving mechanic in most Ubisoft titles (I’m talking about you, Watch Dogs). The story is a little lackluster and it can get awfully repetitive seeing long range bullets fly through people skulls (never thought I’d say that) but there are only so many different variations of shots you can take.
One thing that I did find very surprising is that there is no multiplayer mode. With the main story not being very memorable and the exclusion of multiplayer it makes me think “why would I ever go back and play it again?”. I still don’t really have an answer to that question.
However, in the game’s favour; the sniping mechanic (which is what the entire game is based around) is very well thought out and put together and to begin with it does feel very satisfying to blow someone’s brains out after making fine adjustments for wind.
As I previously mentioned there is the occasional drop in frame rate but this is just the beginning of Sniper Ghost Warrior 3’s problems. By far the most frustrating part of Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 occurs when you fall into places that you can’t climb out of. You have to re-load from the last save point and loading takes ages. I timed it at one point and I was waiting for almost three minutes and I’ve heard people online say that they’ve been stuck on loading screens for almost 5 minutes.
Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 is poor. It has some decent moments when you first start playing but when the monotony kicks in it can just get boring. Coupled with all of the bugs can make for a really frustrating experience. CI Games, you can do better than this.
