Little Nightmares is an upcoming tense, horror-adventure game from Tarsier Studios. Tarsier are no strangers when it comes to making huge hits as they are the creators of Little Big Planet, which became a true staple of the PlayStation 3 and that success has only continued with the release of LBP 2 and 3. There has been quite a lot of hype for Little Nightmares, with Beta testing creating a long string of positive reviews so it will be interesting to see how it all turns out.
The first thing that you are sure to notice are the similarities between Little Nightmares and Little Big Planet. It appears to play in a very similar style; with a side scrolling camera to track the players movement. Players also appear to be trapped in a 3D world which at times is made to look 2D which is what Little Big Planet did very well. There are also several puzzles to solve if you want to progress from one area to the next, again this is like LBP.
However, this is where the similarities end. Where Little Big Planet was made to be family friendly and fun for anyone with its vibrant colours, beautiful music and universal themes; Little Nightmares couldn’t be further from that. It is dark and dreary and fills you with an overall feeling of dread. You play as a small boy in a yellow coat who is constantly trying to not be eaten by a gluttonous chef. Throughout parts of the game you will be trying to navigate through incredibly dark places (both in lighting and themes) with just your trusty lighter as your only source of vision.
Little Nightmares is scheduled for release April 28 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
