It’s official. There will be a third game in the Darksiders franchise. Darksiders 3 has just been announced by its publishers, THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games. It must be welcome news to the cult following that the first two games in the series had.
The Darksiders Story
First released in 2010 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, Darksiders went on to becoming one of those cult classics that may not have had the biggest fan-base compared to other franchises but they were incredibly passionate about the game. Their passion was then reignited in 2012 with the release of Darksiders 2 but then it went quiet for a long time. I think most fans had probably given up on the idea of a third game but fast forward 5 years (6 by the time of release) and Darksiders 3 has been announced.
The first two games (and I’d imagine the third too) are action role playing games with elements of hack and slash game play. They tend to focus heavily on dark themes, not dissimilar to Dark Souls or Bloodborne but slightly tamer and much more forgiving than the both of those two franchises. I like to think of Darksiders as a watered down Dark Souls but fans would probably not be pleased with that statement.
In Darksiders 3 players will take control of Fury. The quest that she has been given is to destroy the Seven Deadly Sins incarnate beings. We have also been informed that the game will take place around the same time period as Darksiders 2 but we are still waiting to find out if there will be any intermingling with the story lines.
Darksiders 3 is due for release in 2018 although no specific date has been announced yet.
