Here we have a small indie game that I’m not sure if any of you will have heard of; Call of Duty Infinite Warfare. It comes from a reasonably well known franchise of first person shooter games. In all seriousness though Infinite warfare has a lot to live up to.
Call of Duty used to be the king of shooters for me but now, not so much. It feels like each game is becoming more and more outlandish and Infinite Warfare is no different. In fact it takes the outlandishness to a whole new level. The developers have taken the games from realistic stories based (fairly loosely) on real life events to the latest one which is a futuristic sci-fi shoot’em up in space. I just think they’re trying to move away from what everyone else is doing instead of trying to be better than everyone else in doing what they do. They have messed it up. Although we all knew that before launch judging by the fact that the reveal trailer received more dislikes in the first 24 hours than any other video in YouTube history.
This is where Infinite Warfare does claw back a little credit. It consistently runs smoothly and because the franchise is so well known, the controls are simple to anyone familiar with it. It can be a little disorienting not having a map at times. Particularly when you’re just wandering about in space and you can’t tell where you’re being shot from but that’s something I can deal with. Online gameplay follows the same formula as the story though, it’s just too over the top. At times it feels like I’m playing a game made by a brand new studio who are just experimenting with what they can do.
Sorry, Activision but it’s the worst Call of Duty game that I’ve ever played. Go back to your roots and concentrate on what you’re good at.
